 Product Description

Discover some of Great Britain's most important ancient monuments and archaeological sites with Ordnance Survey's map of Ancient Britain. This redesigned edition shows the location of sites from the Stone Age through to the early Middle Ages on a modern map base. Each archaeological period is identified using different symbols and colours.

The historical map and guide is complemented by a timeline that shows British events in relation to wider world history. Key sites of significant interest are highlighted using photographs, text and thumbnail mapping from the OS Landranger Map series. Additional information, such as a list of archaeological terms, suggested reading and museums to visit, is also included.

This map is double sided, and supplied folded with a card cover

  • Scale: 1: 625 000 (about 1 inch to 10 miles)
  • Size: 1270 x 952 mm (133 x 240 mm folded)
  • Full colour

Ancient Britain’s sites, monuments and related museums overprinted on a large, double-sided present day map of the country at 1:625,000 from the Ordnance Survey, plus numerous panels, maps and photos providing extensive additional information.

The base map has altitude colouring to indicate the topography and shows the present day road network. Symbols arranged according to the period (Palaeo/Mesolithic, Neolithic, Bronze, Iron, Roman, and Medieval) and use (civil, defence, domestic, industrial, religious/ritual, and funerary/burial) show locations of the sites. Also marked are related museums, as well as linear works, trackways, and Roman roads. The map is overprinted with British National Grid.

Surrounding the map are numerous panels providing further information including contact details of relevant organizations, photos, drawings and profiles, a glossary of archaeological terms, a chronological table placing British events in a wider historical context, reading recommendations, etc. Many panels describing important archaeological remains are accompanied by extracts from OS Landranger maps at 1:50,000 showing their exact location.

The map has been compiled by the national heritage bodies maintained by Historic England, Historic Environment Scotland and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales. Publications date of this edition: February 2016.
