Ontario Maps

Ontario takes its name from Lake Ontario which means “beautiful water” in Iroquoian. Ontario consists of four main geographic regions:

  • The unpopulated Hudson Bay Lowlands in the north and northeast which are sparsely forested and mainly consist of swampland.
  • The sparingly populated Canadian shield in the central and north-western area of the province which covers the majority of the land area in Ontario. This area is rich in minerals and is filled with lakes and rivers.
  • The Carolinian forest area which covers the southwest. The most well-known geographic feature of this area is Niagara Falls which is the part of the larger Niagara Escarpment region.
  • The temperate Great Lake-Saint Lawrence Valley region which is the most populated region in Canada. Agriculture and industry are concentrated in this area.
